The Great White North

CIWV(Wave 94.7)/Ontario MD Mary Kirk observes: "In these interesting times, you are providing an invaluable forum for discussion. I thought I'd chime in with some thoughts from [co-owner] Doug [Kirk] and me on Smooth Jazz north of the border.

"Here in Canada, Wave 94.7FM is providing the vibrant format full of creativity and talent that Mindi Abair refers to in her comments on Smooth Jazz radio. We continue to develop a unique, exciting sound that fans are embracing. Having just celebrated our ninth birthday, we're now very established in the Canadian market. Our Internet listeners around the world who pick up Wave streaming also constantly express their excitement about our Wave music mix.

"Our terrestrial fans have been clamoring for more and in response we will be boosting the station's present signal on Nov. 9 to increase our power by four times to 100,000 watts in our coverage area. We continue to support our artists and to present wonderful events for our fans through SJ Sunday brunches, concerts, fundraisers, etc.  Toronto's beautiful Old Mill Inn and Spa has become our version of Spaghettini's, our local home for SJ with a regular schedule of wonderful dinner shows in the main dining room. We presented a Thursday night summer series in August that included Four80East & Jack Prybylski, Steve Oliver and others.

We really hope there are other independent operators who might be inspired by our story to pick up these local and loyal audiences and provide them with a fresh version of SJ radio programming.

– Mary Kirk

"We plan a special Christmas show there with Alexander Zonjic and Nick Colionne, an ongoing series in 2010 with Zonjic and special guests; a summer all-star festival; and as always the Saturday night-after celebration with the stars of the Canadian Smooth Jazz Awards. The Canadian Smooth Jazz Awards is now in its sixth year and takes place on April 23, 2010 in the lovely Living Arts Centre once again. It's always a sold out-show.

"Through special events like these and through our everyday programming, we are committed to presenting talented new artists to SJ fans and dedicated to helping all our artists succeed, whether they are established or emerging. Our mix of old and new, Canadian and International, keeps our music fresh. Our on-air hosts love the music and ensure that all our artists are familiar to the fans.
