The Straight Skinny
Programmers Thinking Strategically in the Trenches
By Carol Archer |

Now that we have heard from former Smooth Jazz programming stalwarts Michael Fischer, Blake Lawrence, Frank Cody and Steve Williams, Broadcast Architecture CEO Allen Kepler suggests that readers might benefit by hearing from PDs who currently work in Smooth Jazz too. I concur; thus, a couple of weeks ago I reached out to a cross section of those who represent commercial outlets today to learn what they are doing to move their stations – and Smooth Jazz – forward at this critical juncture.
Naturally, I am aware that most PDs are crazy-busy juggling massive workloads. Still, as you might imagine, I am disappointed to have heard from only three: Sandusky's KWJZ Carol Handley, Clear Channel's KYOT/Phoenix's Smokey Rivers and Elyria-Lorain's WNWV Angie Handa. Believe me when I say I am in search of "inspirational" tales in Smooth Jazz. So, if you have stories to share, please do, as readers will take heart from your insights.
KWJZ/Seattle PD Carol Handley comments: "The most cutting edge innovations from KWJZ is something you wrote about in R&R about our program called QUU, which is now in place and being used by our advertisers. We are also using it promotionally on-air as a way for our audience to find out about the music we play on the station and to be able to purchase it through a direct link with Amazon and the iTunes Store. |

"Listeners can also go to QUU either online or through a phone app to find out about an advertiser that aired and to see, at minimum, the name of the client; at most a video clip, audio clip and possibly a discount offer just for those who go to QUU through Sandusky. It just got fully launched this week." |
